Poisons and other Substances

EZ-PID has been specifically designed to support responders whilst taking poisoning enquiries and the substances module is key to providing responders with important key information as the enquiry is being processed.

When entering enquiries into the system, responders can either enter substance names as needed, or they can choose substances from a list of known substances. The latter is clearly the preferred, but it does require that the substance records have already been created within the system. Where the poisons information service is responsible for collating safety data sheets and other information from substance manufacturers, this valuable information can be entered into the EZ-PID System using the substances module.

The substances data record can be used to capture some classification details about the substance, some basic safety data sheet details, and the actual safety date sheet itself can be linked and displayed within EZ-PID. The substances module also enables substances to be linked to manufacturers to display contact and emergency information for that substance.

The ingredients section is used to capture details about all of the ingredients that make up substance. These ingredients can be other substances that have been saved into the system or substances that are not known to the system. These details include information such as the substance name, a code, class, CAS number and the concentration.

The substances module also enables alert words to be defined and some notes about why that alert word has been included. These alert words are then used to drive the alert status module within EZ-PID.

Whereas most responders working in a poisons information centre have access to many resources, the poisoning notes saved into the substance’s data record are pulled through into the enquiry data entry form. This conveniently prompts responders with qualified, useful, and consistent information during the enquiry taking process and at a time when it is most needed.
